Back to Back Champs: Southern Virginia’s Women’s Volleyball — Season Recap

This past Saturday, Nov. 5, Southern Virginia Knight’s volleyball stepped on the court .at 2 p.m. for the chance to become USA South Conference Champions for the second year in a row. After a hard fought battle, the Knights walked away with the trophy after three consecutive winning sets.

Although it was a rough start in the beginning, the Knights ended the first month of the season with a record of 9–6. Since then, the Knights have been unstoppable. In the month of October, the team has gone 13–1, bringing their record to 21–7. The Knights are currently ranked as the first seed in the USA South conference with a 17–1 record in conference play along with a 10 game winning streak and a 15 game win streak in the conference.

On Oct. 20, the Knights volleyball team hosted Salem College in a conference matchup for senior night. The Knights honored their two seniors Courtney Pinkston and Emma Steiger. The Knights defeated Salem College in three straight sets winning the first 25–21, the second 25–19, and the final set 25–16. The two seniors played well as Courtney Pinkston led the offense with a game high of 16 kills and Emma Steiger with 21 digs.

When asking Emma Steiger what her favorite part of senior night was and what the goal was for the rest of the season, she responded as the following, “My favorite part of senior night was beating Salem in 3 sets. For the rest of the season, I’m looking forward to competing in the conference tournament and hopefully making it back to the NCAA tournament.”

The Knights started the first round of the conference tournament on Nov. 1 where they faced off against Pfeiffer University. After that game, the Knights went on to play Salem College and then William Peace University for the championship. In total, the Knights played 10 games during the conference playoffs, winning nine to secure the championship. Defending the Champion title, the Knights will now be advancing to the National NCAA tournament!
