This year, Southern Virginia University has gained a handful of new coaches this fall semester. Out of all the new athletic additions, I was given the opportunity to interview three of them. Continue reading to meet some of Southern Virginia’s new coaches!

Marshall Ferris is from Auckland, New Zealand and is an assistant coach on the rugby team. Ferris coaches to give back to the game of rugby, as it helped him in many ways. Ferris also hopes to inspire United States born players to participate in the game and to help rugby grow. Ferris likes the history behind Southern Virginia’s campus and its tight-knit community. His favorite part of Buena Vista is the mountains; all the green reminds him of New Zealand. If he could take part in another sport besides rugby, it would be football, baseball, or basketball because of its salary as a coach.

Tom Cudney is from London, Ontario, Canada. His family immigrated here to the United States in 1965 to East Haven, Connecticut. Cudney is here at Southern Virginia as a personal favor to head football Coach Edwin Mulitalo. Cudney coaches football because it allows him to remain in the game that he loves, giving back to the game that has given him so much. His favorite places to be around campus are the stadium, football office, and the Knight’s Dining Hall. If he had to play another sport besides football, it would be basketball or baseball because those are the two sports he excelled at in high school.

Jeramie Murray is from Cedar City, Utah. He is here at Southern Virginia to coach track and field. Specifically, sprints, hurdles, and jumps. Murray started coaching to stay involved in track and field. He loves seeing student athletes reach their potential and surpass their goals. He likes Buena Vista because it’s a small college town, and it’s the best thing going for him. He enjoys the trees on campus and he likes that it’s easy to get around. If he had to do another sport besides track and field, he would have played volleyball because of his club participation in college.
