In life, each individual weaves a unique story, a narrative shaped by personal experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Southern Virginia University (SVU) serves as a canvas where these distinct journeys converge, creating a vibrant community of students with diverse backgrounds and narratives. In this mosaic of life stories, we spotlight three remarkable individuals — Rykell Bennent, Liz Ursenbach, and Nate Robeck — each with their own unique journey to SVU. From the sun-kissed shores of Hawai’i to the challenges of overcoming anxiety and the transformative power of commitment, their stories exemplify the rich and varied experiences that make SVU a tapestry of resilience, growth, and community.

Rykell Bennent: A Journey from Hawaii to SVU

Rykell Bennent’s life has been a journey of relocation and self-discovery, shaping the person she is today. Born and raised in the vibrant landscapes of Hawai’i, her family’s move to Utah at the age of 8 marked the beginning of a series of transformative experiences. Living with her grandparents during the transition, Rykell eventually settled in Heber and Saint George, where she spent much of her formative years.

An interesting chapter in Rykell’s life unfolded when, after selling their house, her family embarked on a six-month travel adventure before choosing St. George as their new home. Despite the frequent relocations, Rykell managed to graduate high school six months early, a testament to her determination and focus. Her journey to Southern Virginia University (SVU) began shortly after, guided by what she describes as a divine influence. Within less than a month after high school graduation, she found herself starting a new chapter at SVU.

Rykell’s interests outside of academics reveal a creative and relaxed side. She cherishes spending time with her boyfriend and roommate, indulging in painting and photography, and occasionally catching up on much-needed naps. While she appreciates the friendships and memories formed at SVU, she expresses a desire for a broader range of learning opportunities and topics in her classes.

Despite her feelings of familiarity with some subjects, Rykell remains engaged at SVU, contributing to the diverse tapestry of student life. Her unique background and experiences continue to shape her perspective, adding a rich layer to the community at SVU.

Liz Ursenbach: Navigating Transitions and Self-Discovery at SVU

Liz’s journey from St. George, Utah, to Torrance, California, and eventually to Southern Virginia University (SVU) has been marked by transitions, challenges, and self-discovery. Despite the early struggles with making friends during elementary and middle school, Liz found her rhythm in high school until the disruptive force of COVID-19 changed the trajectory of her experiences.

Amid the pandemic, Liz grappled with anxiety, a battle that became even more complex as she entered a relationship that didn’t stand the test of time. Nevertheless, she emerged from these challenges with resilience, seeking therapy and medication to support her mental health. Now, at 19 years old, Liz is thriving at SVU, finding purpose in her studies.

One of the notable hurdles Liz faced was coming out at a school where she initially knew no one, and was also far from her friends and family. Despite forming meaningful connections in her freshman year, many of her friends departed at the end of the year, leaving Liz with valuable lessons about impermanence and the evolving nature of relationships.

In her free time, Liz enjoys watching movies, drawing, and crafting stories — a testament to her creative spirit. Looking towards the future, she envisions a life involving a temple marriage, a fulfilling and well-paying job, and the possibility of raising a family. Liz’s positive attitude and commitment to personal growth make her an integral part of the SVU community, embodying the resilience and determination that characterize many of its students.

Nate Robeck: Transformative Growth and Commitment at SVU

For Nate Robeck, the journey through education has been one of overcoming challenges and committing to personal growth. Early on, he struggled with school attendance and grades, but he has since transformed into a dedicated student at SVU.

Nate’s interests extend beyond academics, as he finds joy in playing video games, spending time with friends, and engaging in the physically demanding sport of rugby. His ambitions for the future revolve around building a family, achieving financial stability, and pursuing a career in information technology (IT).

At SVU, Nate appreciates the supportive faculty who play a crucial role in his academic journey. The university’s environment, characterized by a commitment to student success, has contributed to Nate’s positive outlook on his educational experience.

Nate’s story is one of transformation and perseverance, a narrative that aligns with the ethos of SVU. As he envisions a future that includes family, financial stability, and a successful career in IT, Nate stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the supportive community at SVU.

The diversity and uniqueness of each individual student here at SVU is what makes this campus a wonderful place. Our student body comes from all walks of life, different parts of the country, and a variety of backgrounds. While students may each come to SVU in their own way, and may have their own visions for their futures, one thing remains the same, we are all one big family of Knights!
