Southern Virginia University is not just a place for academic excellence; it’s also a home away from home for students pursuing their higher education. When it comes to choosing the perfect place to live during your college years, SVU offers a variety of on-campus housing options that cater to the different preferences and needs of each individual student.

Dorm-style Housing

One of the most popular on-campus housing options amongst the freshman class at SVU, is the traditional dormitory-style residence halls — the Lofts, Craton (all-female housing), and Robey (all-male housing). These halls provide a close-knit community for its residents, fostering friendships and connections among your fellow classmates. They offer shared rooms and common areas, making them a great choice for students who enjoy a lively and social atmosphere. Plus, living in the residence halls means you are just steps away from campus amenities like the library, dining facilities, academic buildings, and recreational areas. One of the Loft residents, Lauren Fowler, said this:

“I love living in the lofts because it’s so easy to meet new people and there is always something going on in the lobbies which makes it a fun place to live in!”

If this sounds intriguing to you, then these are the rooms for you!

Apartment Style Housing

For those who prefer a more independent living experience, SVU offers apartment-style housing — Walnut, Gayle Smith, Carriage Townhomes & Mods, and Stoddard Living. One of our well experienced students, Audrey McKeon, had this to say about the Walnut apartments,

“The Walnut apartments are the most well rounded option for on campus living arrangements. With a comfortable open living space, kitchen, and three bathrooms, it provides plenty of room for all the residents. It is close to everything on campus and provides for the option to be involved with the school but have your own space/kitchen. I have loved my time living in Walnut!”

These units typically come with a kitchen, living area, and shared or private bedrooms, allowing students to enjoy a degree of autonomy while still being a part of the campus community. While all of these are considered “on-campus” housing, some are closer to campus than others. You have the option to either be close to campus amenities, or if you want to feel farther away to campus there are options a bit more put away and private. This option of housing is ideal for upperclassmen or students who prefer a quieter, more private living environment.

Off-Campus Housing

In addition to traditional residence halls and apartment-style housing, you can also find different off-campus housing options that are approved by our Housing Department. One option of this could be considered the River Crossing Townhomes. While these are considered off campus, they are close enough, if not closer, to campus amenities. Another off campus housing option could be house rentals, in which you share with other fellow students — having either a private or shared room.

Family/Married Housing

SVU also offers assistance in helping married couples find family housing. These family-friendly accommodations ensure that all members of the SVU community can pursue their education without worrying about their living situation.

When it comes to on-campus housing at Southern Virginia University, students have a range of options to choose from, each offering a unique living experience. Whether you are seeking a vibrant social scene, a bit more independence, or family-friendly accommodations, SVU’s housing options have you covered. Whichever you choose, you will find a welcoming and supportive community that will make your college years at SVU truly memorable.
