Homesickness can come in many different ways. Some people miss their family and friends, others miss the food. We all know that Buena vista is a quiet little town with not much life here outside of SVU. This is a reason some people can feel homesick while away at university.

I asked SVU student Landon Roylance (Utah) what food would he bring from his hometown to BV. He promptly said that he misses a solid, high-quality fast food burger. His go-to burger from back home is Culver’s and he thinks that the In-and-Out burger is highly overrated. Landon explains that the Culver’s burger is more filling and the fries are a higher quality at Culver’s. He also said that the best burger in BV is from JJs.

Porter Jones, a senior majoring in biology, is from Pierre, South Dakota. He misses deep fried walleye and corn nuggets the most. “Nothing beats fresh caught walleye from the Missouri River and Corn nuggets — the Midwest version of hush puppies, small, warm and loaded with flavor.” He said that there’s nothing like it here in BV.

Being from Hershey, Pennsylvania, I miss higher quality pizza! Every time I visit home, I make a very important trip to my pizza spot and eat my semester’s worth of that valuable cheesy meal.

In the midst of homesickness and bleak tasting food, these culinary connections are what keep students moving forward. Eating familiar foods can evoke positive emotions and memories, which can contribute to overall emotional well-being and reduce feelings of homesickness. So if you’re feeling down try to eat something that reminds you of home!
