Saturday February 3rd Southern Virginia University’s Student Life hosted a dodgeball tournament, where twelve eager teams competed for a variety of prizes. The prizes were awarded to the top three teams, and included-a Costco bundle, a camping bundle, and a movie night bundle. Teams were eliminated from the winners bracket after losing twice, and the remaining teams competed for first, second, and third place.

Teams were made aware before the tournament began that if a team member stepped out of the lines or threw their ball too early, they would be eliminated. Although the rules were made clear, there were many grueling debates and arguments with the refs about whether or not the correct call was made. This seemed to cause some tension between players and refs, but the refs stood their ground and were able to keep the game moving. Each team fought their hardest, but ultimately, three teams came out on top. The teams in the final rounds included, The Missiles, Last Minute Entry, and The Round Table. The Round Table seemed to be the team to beat and although they were expected to take first place, they had a devastating loss to The Missiles which then put them in the race for second or third place. With the last round of dodgeball approaching, the crowd was on their feet eagerly cheering on their teams. The Missiles had already taken first place, and it was now between The Round Table and Last Minute Entry.

Last Minute Entry seemed to go in with a game plan, quickly taking out some of Round Table’s top players. Ultimately, Last Minute Entry, a team that lost their first game, ended the tournament in second place, with The Round Table following in third. Each team in their respective winning order chose their prizes. This event was exciting for all who attended and played. With a huge crowd turnout, it was hard not to have a good time even if your team lost. Events like these are what bring the SVU student body together and allow us to connect with each other.
