Big Fish in a Small Pond — The Benefits of SVU

By Richie Johnson

There are a lot of great benefits to attending Southern Virginia University. Small class sizes make the classes more intimate, not only with the teacher but with the classmates too. If you need help with the homework, a classmate can help you out. If you need to use the office hours, you can talk directly with the professor. These perks give students more individualized attention from professors and a supportive learning environment. This is important to students. Having easier access to campus resources such as academic support services, career counseling, and extracurricular opportunities shows accessibility and enables students to fully explore their interests and talents outside of the classroom.

One of the big highlights of SVU is the opportunity for athletics. Students have the flexibility to pursue their passions and explore new interests in a supportive and inclusive environment. There are athletic programs here at SVU that will take anyone and let them play despite what previous experience they have for example, Field Hockey and Lacrosse. With opportunities like that, students can be college athletes without having to be D1 athletes.

With a smaller student body, SVU can cultivate a tight-knit community where students can form meaningful relationships with classmates, faculty, and staff. Chances are if you enroll in a class here you will know at least one person in your class from a previous one. This sense of belonging enhances the overall college experience and encourages collaboration.

SVU emphasizes the importance of a well-rounded education, where student-athletes can excel both in the classroom and on the field. This type of focus in the development of student-athletes shows that they can participate in athletics while still prioritizing their academic goals giving opportunities for growth as an individual.

Attending a small D3 school like SVU creates the opportunity to receive personalized attention, engage in a community, explore diverse interests, and achieve a balance between academics and extracurricular pursuits.
