Surf’s Up (The Greats)

If there is one movie that doesn’t get the credit it deserves, it is Surf’s Up. With such a unique way of telling the story, the movie is set up as a documentary and follows the journey of Cody Maverick, who dreams of becoming a great surfer like his hero, Big Z. The way that the movie is set up draws you into the story and will have you on the edge of your seat.

Professional Surfers, Rob Machado and Kelly Slater, voiced penguin versions of themselves (Sony Pictures).

I think one of the movie’s biggest strengths lies in the well developed characters. Each character adds an aspect and relatability that resonates with people from all walks of life. Here is a list of some of my favorite characters and what I’ve learned or found interesting about them.

Cody Maverick: Cody Maverick, the main character, is inspiring because of his ambition and determination to become great at what he loves. He also showed resilience through the trials he faced.

Big Z: The surfer that inspired Cody as a kid and later became his mentor. He is a legendary surfer and despite him being a very laid back guy, he still finds ways to share his knowledge and life lessons about humility and balance. Also a really important message is to do what you do because you love it, and not just for the fame.

Chicken Joe: Chicken Joe is more than just a baked chicken from Sheboygan Michigan, he shows what a true friend really is. When Cody faces setbacks or challenges, Chicken Joe is always there with a positive attitude. Also,he set out to look for Cody because he was worried about him. Probably the most likable character in the movie. You really can’t hate him.

Lani: First introduced as a lifeguard when Cody basically falls in love with her at first sight. Lani becomes a close friend with Cody throughout the movie. Through the movie, Lani is seen to be positive and encouraging, and is always there, not only for Cody, but for anyone who needs help.

Tank “the Shredder” Evans: Tank is the most prominent surfer and he knows it. He is very boastful and competitive. Although he may be really intense, he recognizes Cody at the end because he can see Cody’s passion for surfing and his dedication.

Another great thing about Surf’s Up that I have to mention is the amazing soundtrack. They really did a good job at capturing the spirit of surfing. The soundtrack helped tell the story with emotionally elevating beats.

That being said, Surf’s Up is more than just a film about surfing penguins; it carries a universal message about self-discovery, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to oneself. The journey of Cody Maverick from a small Antarctic town to the big waves of Pen Gu Island is a metaphor for personal growth and the pursuit of passion. Everyone has big dreams like Cody Maverick, but if you stay true to yourself and do what you love, anything is possible. Like Cody Maverick said, “I don’t understand why everybody has to be so judgmental. I understand why mom’s judgmental. I think it’s ’cause she cares, *partially*. Think it’s also partially ’cause, everyone else is looking at her like, ‘Hey, Cody’s just a bum.’ ‘Cody’s this,’ ‘Cody’s that,’…..Cody’s me, bro. Let me be me. When is that going to start? Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do.

Don’t wait to watch…its leaving Netflix soon!
