Jenna Porterfield is one of the coolest people on campus, but you probably don’t know why.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not because of the bold neon colors that you will often find her wearing or her diverse Spotify playlists. While we all should acknowledge how awesome those things are, what really makes Jenna so special is her patience and ambition. Not only is Jenna double majoring, but her end goal is to work in special education.

Jenna’s majors are psychology and family and human development. She has been on campus for three or four years now and has been a Buena Vista resident her whole life. Jenna came to Southern Virginia University because it was just up the hill from home, but it was the community and learning experience that convinced her to stay.

She enjoys the small classes and unique teaching styles of her professors. Jenna is not sure when she will graduate, but she is sure that following commencement she wants to stay in Buena Vista and help kids with special needs. Her kind demeanor and charming southern accent ensure that she will excel in her career.

If you are not already convinced that Jenna will do great with the kids she helps, here are a few more things you should know: Jenna loves movies, especially Disney movies; additionally, she has an artsy side, which includes both making art and admiring it; finally, she likes to read in her spare time. Undoubtedly, Jenna’s hobbies will help her connect with kids. Moreover, they will provide her with valuable tools for individualized teaching.

Jenna couldn’t have picked a field that suits her better than special education. She also chose a college that has helped her reach that realization. Just like Jenna, every SVU student has chosen to pursue a specialized education path. Many considerations went into choosing those majors and we want to know what those were for you.
