Opinion: BTS Song Review

By Kaylee Dissel

Formed on June 13, 2013, BTS debuted under BigHit Entertainment (now part of Hybe Labels). Nearly ten years later, BTS has risen to world fame as their newer songs play in stores and on the radio all over the world.

BTS’ music started out very hip-hop when it was first released. Over the years, their music shifted more to pop, though still paying homage to their hip-hop sounds throughout the albums.

“Butterfly” was one of nine songs released on “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (화양연화) Pt. 2.” It features a more soft ballad style of music contrasting their heavy hip-hop/pop influences in their title tracks. This song highlights the stunning vocals and varied rapping skills of the group while telling the story about being afraid to lose someone. The chorus of the song elaborates on that fear, with the gut wrenching vocals, “If I let go of your hand, you’ll fly away and break/ I’m scared, scared, scared of that”.

The emotions of the vocals and pop ballad melody of this song is the reason why I would rate this song a 9/10 when in comparison to the rest of BTS’ discography and the K-pop genre. The overall composition of the song is more on the safe side, definitely a mainstream song with not too many risks being taken with the melody. It’s the vocals and emotion behind the song that makes all the difference.

Give this song a listen, you have my word that it will not disappoint!
