The Knights of Southern Virginia University wrote school history by competing in the 2023 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona, Florida. In the cheer world, this competition is also known as “Daytona.” The biggest accomplishment a team can achieve is finishing in first place. Most people hear of teams competing for cheer nationals all the time, but the actual national championship is the invite only Daytona.

Knight’s cheer received a bid to Daytona back in October 2022 and they have been working on their routine ever since. The entire competition lasted almost a week and the Knights competed for two days back-to-back in the advanced small co-ed DIII division.

The first day of competition featured their prelim, which totaled 25% of their overall score for the whole event. The Knights hit everything on their routine, receiving a score that placed them in second after the first event. The second day of competition featured the finals. This event rounded out the total score and was the most important part of the competition. The Knights competed their hearts out and did exceptionally well, placing fourth after the scores were tallied. For Southern Virginia’s first appearance at this level, fourth place is a remarkable feat! We look forward to their success in years to come as they continue to get better and better.
