Massive Upgrades Set to Take Place at Southern Virginia University

Good news, Knights! We’ve got a lot of updates and renovations coming to Southern Virginia. Courtesy of several generous donations given by alumni of the University, our campus will be seeking several new amenities in the following academic year. From small wins such as an increase in variety of items in Hilltop Marketplace or paint jobs in the residential halls, to huge improvements that I’ll target in the remainder of the article. As a whole, our community has a lot to look forward to.

It was stated in an emergency conference held between board members and several high-level donors on Monday, March 27 that a sum of approximately $7.3 million will be allocated to Southern Virginia over the next three years.

A topic that continued to be brought up throughout the meeting was campus parking. To coincide with parking issues, the grass in front of the Walnut Apartments will be transformed into additional parking for students and faculty. Additionally, after a recent survey was conducted (400 responses), the Stoddard Center’s parking lot will be paved. Among the results of the survey, multiple students reported injuries or car damage due to the gravel parking lot, calling for the University to take an appropriate response.

Speaking of getting paved, they’re is great news for all of our athletes…The road leading to The Fields is on the list of upgrades! In the same survey mentioned above, 94% of students noted that “needing a car wash after every trip to The Fields was annoying.” Another respondent to this survey — one of our long-time investors and alumni from the class of 2004 — noted that she once needed a trip to the auto shop after a rock was sent through the windshield of her 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV. Thanks to these responses, it was decided that asphalt needed to be laid in place of the dirt/gravel-hybrid road for the protection of our students and the Knight community as a whole.

In addition to all of the improvements previously mentioned, other miscellaneous changes include improved campus Wi-Fi, outdoor seating in front of the dining hall, and more fish in the pond outside of the Kimball Student Center.

April Fools! Unfortunately, the “official meeting” never actually happened. So, the University will not be doing any major renovations… yet!
