Southern Virginia Athletics: The Year of the Pitcher

By William Stanton

Softball and baseball have both started off on the right foot, and a lot of their success starts on the mound with their freshmen pitchers.

Southern Virginia University’s softball team is well on their way to success as the team continually battles to be better than the day before. What’s different from last season? Unlike last year, the team contains 24 girls (six being pitchers). With depth like this, the team can only get better.

With ten games already, softball is fresh off a 12–0 win against Sweet Briar College with freshman pitcher Malia Davis (’26) throwing a no-hitter on debut. Continuing forward, the Knights went on to sweep Gallaudet University with both Malia Davis and Madison Lloyd as their starting pitchers. For Llyod’s first time on the mound this year, she pitched a no-hitter until the sixth inning, securing a win with a solid defense behind her. In the upcoming weeks, the Lady Knights will host Shenandoah University on March 16, Juniata College on March 18, and Pfeiffer University on March 31.

Baseball is also in the beginning of a successful season as the team added 18 freshmen to their roster. Of the 18 freshmen added, 10 were recruited to the team to pitch. Even though many players will have to sit out each game due to the influx of players, this allows for great competition throughout the week as each position is continually up for grabs.

As it is still early on in the season, the line-up will continue to change and allow for new faces to play, allowing for the best players to emerge when the more important games come around. For this week, baseball will host Brevard College on March 17 at 11 a.m and March 18 at 12 p.m and 2 p.m.

Make sure to come out and support both the softball and baseball team this season!
