Lady Knights Ground Flying Squirrels in Simple Fashion

By Tanner Gonder

The Lady Knights of Southern Virginia University faced off against the Flying Squirrels of Mary Baldwin on Tuesday, January 31 in the Knights Arena. As the season is nearing its completion, the Knights needed a huge win to help them secure a playoff spot. With an overtime win against Brevard fresh on their minds, the Knights got off to a quick start, needing only five seconds after tipoff for Emma Camden to knock down a three-pointer. The game quickly got out of hand as the Knights out scored the Flying squirrels 26–12 in the first quarter and 21–13 in the second.

All the Lady Knights’ hard work paid off for the whole team after each individual player was able to get good time on the court. Some of the individuals who stood out were Abigail Snyder (’25) and Barrett Jessop (‘23) who each drained three three-pointers. Taylor Miyasaki (‘25), playing in her first game since her injury, nailed two threes in the second half, securing the win for the Knights. Seeing her excitement and smile after draining the three’s brought a smile to every fan’s face accompanied by her fellow teammates jumping off the bench.

The Lady Knights are currently 10–9 on the season, but they remain 10–3 in conference, resulting in a current third place. If the Knights continue at this pace, they will qualify for the conference tournament. With only five games left in the season, the Knights will need our continual support to close out the rest of the season.
