Allie Cordero: Pitcher and Bookworm

By Jared Smith

Allie Cordero is a pitcher for the Southern Virginia softball team and a senior; double majoring in biochemistry and biology.

Following graduation, Allie plans on attending PA school to become a physician’s assistant.

Originally from Riverton, UT, Allie loves books, hikes, and museums. She enjoys going to theatre performances at Southern Virginia and exploring Buena Vista.

Allie, when asked, specifically reflected on her experience at Monticello:

“Going to Monticello for the America the enlightenment course was a 10/10 experience! We got to see the entire building; it was awesome.”

Allie is also passionate about reading. Just this past summer, Cordero has read six novels. Of those books, Allie recommended The Saint Squad series by Tracy Hunter Abramson. The Saint Squad is an action-packed, exciting story about a group of navy seals based out of Virginia Beach. On top of that, each book is written from the perspective of a different character.

Before Southern Virginia University, Allie attended Brigham Young University. After a year and a half in Utah, Allie wanted something different; eventually ending up at Southern Virginia.

“I didn’t like the big school environment with all the competitiveness. So, I came out here to play softball and to be in this tight-knit community. Everybody is so nice out here. It is less like you are students fighting against students — you’re working together, and it is more like a family.”

Before our interview ended, I asked Allie what advice she would give to new students at Southern Virginia. She responded with the following:

“It can be really stressful, so find something that you love to do, and spend some time doing it. Take some time to relax. There is always going to be another assignment and you could always be studying something or making flashcards, but it is important to take time for yourself. Study and work hard, but make sure you find time to be yourself. Go hang out with friends and go get cookout — especially their cheddar cheese bites.”

Now that you know all about her, be sure to cheer for Allie the next time you go to a softball game!
