Your Happier and Healthier Morning Routine

By Severio Martin

Life is stressful and college can add even more stress to your life. The Mayo Clinic, in a recent article, cited how a good morning routine can bring power to your morning, making a positive difference in your life. There are various routines that can be adopted for a healthier morning.

I had a chance to talk with fellow students and I asked them what steps they take to create a useful morning routine that benefits their day. Below I’ve listed three of their responses that I think can help everyone.

  1. Get out of bed and keep a routine!

Kate Huber (’22) says, “I am far from perfect at a happy and healthy morning routine. But I can tell you that when I get myself out of bed and keep a routine; I am happier, more energetic, less stressed, and more productive throughout the day. My ideal morning starts with a morning prayer, brushing my teeth, making my bed, and heading to workout.”

2. Get a consistent amount of sleep!

Matthew McCubbins (’24) says,“ It depends on the person but, consistent sleep is really important as well as eating something healthy to start off your day. Taking care of your body takes care of your mind…Whatever it is that a person decides to do, being consistent is the most important thing.”

3. Don’t snooze your alarm!

Haislee Hill (’24) says, “I think a great way to start your morning is to get up when your alarm goes off, don’t snooze it for a million years. Also, always make your bed in the morning and drink a glass of water.”

For me, the key to a productive morning is to set up a healthy sleep schedule. I have learned, as a student, that when your day is demanding, your ability to sleep is a major advantage. With my set sleep schedule, I am able to see the power of having a healthy routine in my life.

While there is a general guideline for life such as sleeping, eating and exercising regularly, we should all try to find a routine that works for us (and try to stick with it).
